Re-recorded the Jazz Bass parts on the Tascam 2488 using the Bass Pod XT. Things definitely sound more tuneful (or at least, more in tune…).
Hope to edit tomorrow, for remixing/remastering next week.

On repeated listens, I came to the conclusion that the bass line for …FIDGET was way out of tune. I mean way out of tune. Worse than that even… This was as a result of the Jazz Bass being very badly in need a of a set-up at the time of recording, a matter which is dealt with here. That having been sorted, I decided that the best thing to do would be to re-record all the bass parts (9 of ‘em). So I spent a few hours last night re-recording on the Tascam 2488, using the Bass Pod XT. It’s amazing how much easier it is to play a bass line against actual music, rather than just against beats and a metronome. The session went quite smoothly.
I spent this morning doing audio cleanup on the bass parts in Cool Edit Pro and editing in CE5. The earlier and simpler parts hardly needed any editing at all, while the more complex parts in the middle needed a bit more. I also added a touch of auto-tuning to some of the Aria parts.
All in all, the track sounds much better and is ready for remixing and mastering next week.
I must have a good listen to see if there are any more of the Jazz Bass parts that need a seeing-too. Plenty of time for that…

A second cut at a bass line for Peter Fitzpatrick’s song, Dirty Little Secret
Recorded 15 bass parts on the Tascam 2488, using the 4003 and Bass Pod XT.
Unusually for me, I played the bass with the fingers (actually, one finger…) rather than with a plec. Got a nice “borpy” bass sound, verging somewhat towards the sound of Free’s Andy Fraser on All Right Now. But nowhere near as good.
I need to do some audio cleanup of the wavs tomorrow and then I’ll Soundcloud ‘em for Peter. Hope he likes the work.

Spent a lot of the day recording a bass line for Peter Fitzpatrick for a song entitled Through The Lens. I recorded 10 different parts on the Tascam 2488 using the 4003 and the Bass Pod XT.
An interesting blend of styles:- Jah Wobble in the verses and Bruce Foxton in the choruses. I was going to do something fancy for the middle 8, but I chickened out and went for a plain vanilla line.
I’ll spend a bit of time doing audio cleanup and such, and then put it up on Soundcloud for Peter. Hopefully he’ll like it.
I have another session to do for him, which I hope to nail during the course of the week. And then who knows…?

…HEAVEN…
I’d planned to track bass parts with the Jazz Bass, but for some reason I couldn’t get it tuned properly. The action is pretty high on it, so it probably needs to be set up (the casualty list is growing…). I decided to bring in the 4003 from the subs’ bench, which is a rather nice option to have, don’t you think?
Quickly recorded 10 parts on the Tascam 2488 using the Bass Pod XT. Hopefully this should edit out nicely…
…EVONY…/…IDLENESS…/…LAKE…
Threw together some rough mixes in CE5 for guitar tracking next week. Where …IDLENESS… was concerned, I had to record some MIDI parts as audio before making the rough mix (D110 - Warm Pad/JV880 – Dig Rhodes 2). …IDLENESS… is sounding particularly fine even thought there’s a need for some heavy editing of the bass parts. …LAKE…still sounds rather odd, but not as odd as it used to sound before I tracked the bass parts.
Time to introduce a new weapon from my musical arsenal. All will be revealed on Monday (hopefully…).

Recorded 5 bass parts on the Tascam 2488 using the 4003 and the Bass Pod XT. A rather insistent plodding bass line for a plod-along rock track. I wonder what will happen when I start tracking 6-string on it?
That’s it – I can now confirm that bass tracking for the album is complete. I’d be aiming to have the 6-string tracking done by the end of March, were it not for this damn trip abroad starting tomorrow. At this rate it won’t be finished by April – who knows exactly? Plenty of things to do in the meantime, thankfully – I won’t be idle.
Try not to mess up the country in my absence, k?

COP CAR…
Came up with a mad set of HALi0n One beats (3/4 time – 150 bpm) and recorded 7 bass parts on the Tascam 2488 using the 4003 and the Bass Pod XT. Having some serious issues relating to feedback on the bass, but I got it sorted in the end. This could turn out to be an interesting track…
Remember how I said today would be my last day for tracking bass? Well, I was wrong… turns out I have to record bass for LAKE also. And when I looked at the relevant CE5 project file, I found I also had to program some rhythm too. So I programmed up a “real” kit using Kore Player. This will need to be edited over the weekend, so I’ll be able to track the bass on Monday.
Not fully convinced that this track will make the final cut, but I’ll stick with it for another while longer. Maybe I’ll find some inspiration somewhere…

Busy and productive day today…
VICHY CIRCLES
Recorded 2 bass parts on the Tascam 2488 using the 4003 and the Bass Pod XT. The first part is a very brief intro, while the second part is a loop which gets repeated throughout the rest of the track. Initial checking indicates that the loop “loops” very acceptably.
While I was saving my files, I noticed on the DVD-RW (which was the original one I’ve had since I started working on this track in February 2007) that there was a wav entitled “vocals1″. Since the track has always (and only ever) been an instrumental, I was curious to find out what the “vocals” actually were. Turns out they were original and unedited synthetic vocals I’d used on the track DEATH TOLL TRAINEE off my 2008 album Raw Mesh. I’d obviously “mis-saved” them back in the day.
PERP WALK
Recorded 4 long bass parts again on the 4003. I have no real idea how the track will finally go, but once I have edited the various bass parts into a coherent bass line, I’ll be able to see where I’m going with this.
I plan to do the last bass tracking session for the album tomorrow. I’ve no idea what I’m going to do yet. Something odd, probably… After that, it’s into 6-string territory.
I’ll be out of the country for most of the week next week, so I’ll be taking a short (and possibly well-deserved and necessary) break from the project from Tuesday on to the following weekend. Hopefully I’ll be all invigorated, like…

I was very kindly asked by my good friend Peter Fitzpatrick if I might track some bass for a track he’s working on called Dirty Little Secret. Always happy to oblige Peter!
He wanted something in the vein of Mick Karn RIP. Now, if I was ever asked to play bass in the style of any given musician, Karn would’ve been in the top three of bassists whose unique playing style I wouldn’t have an earthly hope of trying to reproduce. I’d have more hope of pushing an oil tanker into a dry dock with my backside than copying Karn. But I thought I’d be able to have a pop at doing a bit of muscular pub band funky bass, with the assistance of modern technology.
So I fired up the 4003 and the Bass Pod XT and spent three or four hours gamely attempting to follow in the thumbsnaps of the legendary Japan bassist.
Over 14 tracks of audio, I got most of the elements I think I need to edit together a decent bass line for the track. Of course, I’m not the client, so I’ll be giving Peter all the wavs so he can re-arrange the bass line as he sees fit.
It’ll take me a day or two to clean up the audio and then edits the various parts together. Hope Peter likes it…

djp
