Private Sector Weather Forecast Service/Hosanna In The Hiace – 300511

Sponsored by the letters B and C.

Another happy day in the gulag!

Mixed/mastered both …WEATHER and HOSANNA… in CE5. Cubase VST/24 and AA3. Couldn’t have gone more smoothly if both tasks had been smothered in pure Irish creamery butter, with an extra layer of whipping cream for added smoothness. Added a few slight dub elements to both mixes and did a little bit of audio slidearound, but not much effort required. Both mixes are very, very satisfactory.

I’m so delighted to get these two key album tracks sorted so easily. Why wasn’t last week like this…?

Rough mixing – 050511

Sponsored by the letter R.

Did very rough MP3 mixes of the following tracks:-

  1. A Truth You Can Happily Accept
  2. Braille For The Feet (sadly, this track ain’t going to make the final cut – destined for B-side “glory”)
  3. Flood Plain
  4. Fly Me To Hecuba
  5. Future Plans For Yesterday
  6. Hosanna In The Hiace
  7. King Fidget
  8. No Position To Argue
  9. On The Lake Beneath The Shoreline
  10. People Who Look Like Other People
  11. Perp Walk

Five more to do after that over the course of the weekend. Then it’s time to make me minds up…;-)

Hosanna In The Hiace – 180411

Sponsored by the letters N and P.

For some strange reason, that I cannot readily explain, when I attempted to re-install CE4 and CE5 on my PC, both programs worked perfectly, barring the requirement to copy some plugins and presets from the CE4 folder to the CE5 folder. But hey, just because I can’t explain it doesn’t mean I’m going to complain. Just take each good day as it comes…

…so, with that in mind, I edited the various guitar parts in CE5. I took the same approach as I took with the bass parts – where there is repetition, let there be cut’n'paste. Sounds all nice and tidy. I think this is going to be a “key” track on the album – I can feel it in me water…;-)

Time to move on, I think.

Hosanna In The Hiace – 170411

Sponsored by the letters H, I and J.

Busy day today, mostly involving a quick dash up the M7/M50 to Ikea to get some bits and pieces for our guest room (German exchange student arriving in a couple of weeks). On our return, I had a quick editing session. Due to an ongoing custody battle between Elder Daughter and me (I?) for possession of my laptop charger, I had just enough juice in the ‘puter to finish off editing the bass parts in CE5. Sounds rather good, if I do say so myself.

Memo to self – really must sort out this hassle between Cubase and my PC.

Hosanna In The Hiace – 160411

Sponsored by the letters D and E.

Edited most of the bass parts in CE5. There is a lot of repetition in the various parts, so I got the common elements sorted and cut’n'pasted them throughout the tracks, leaving me to concentrate on the variations within each part. Got up as far as the 7th part, which is unique and would have taken a bit of time to edit, but I ran out of time today, so I’ll leave it to tomorrow.

Sounding pretty good so far.

Whatever Happened To The Citizens Of My Abandoned Evony City?/Fly Me To Hecuba/Braille For The Feet/Private Sector Weather Forecast Service/Hosanna In The Hiace

Sponsored by the letters I and J.

Did audio cleanup on the wavs in Cool Edit Pro. Tedious work to be sure, but the quicker I get through this part of the process, the quicker I can proceed to the editing stage.

Roadtrip tomorrow and Friday. Catch youze later…

In Heaven For A Conference/Hosanna In The Hiace/Some sad news – 160211

Sponsored by the letters G and H.

…HEAVEN…

Recorded 2 guitar parts on the Tascam 2488 using my Aria TA-40 and my Pod 2.0.

In case you’re not familiar with the TA-40, here’s mine…

Aria impressed...?

I haven’t played the TA-40 in quite a while, so last night I went to change the strings, which is something I haven’t done in a long, long time. Took me the most of an hour, and as I was doing it, the bloody guitar attacked me…

Scarred for life...

One thing I realised was that the guitar is well overdue a proper set-up. Too late to do anything about it now, but I must remember it for the future.

The two parts I recorded were nice simple lines  that I plan to interchange with each other throughout the track. The guitar is not a key element in the track.

HOSANNA…

By contrast, I recorded 6 guitar parts for this track. Mostly arpeggios, but some jazzy “chords” also.  Should edit together nicely.

One of the quirks of the Tascam 2488 is that while you can select any given channel to “clear out” (i.e. delete the wavs on the channel) , the machine will default to clear out channel 1 from time to time (not a random thing, I hasten to add, but say if you decide to save the “song” partway through a session). Normally, I am very careful to make sure that before I start recording on a given channel, I set that channel to clear out; otherwise I might, for example clear out channel 4 when I really want to clear out channel 5. But sometimes I forget…

Today, I had a rather nice arpeggio part recorded on channel 1 and was working my way through the other channels when I realised that I had forgotten to set my current channel to clear out and accidentally cleared out channel 1. Took me about an hour to re-record the relevant part (by this stage, my finger tips were aching like billy-oh). Cracked it eventually.

An obvious workaround here is not to record on channel 1 at all, but that’s like saying you’ll never get flat feet if you cut off your legs…

(Sorry if the last few paragraphs don’t read very well – I had to do a spot of decorating after my session and my clothes reek of white spirit -  I think I’m a little high in fact).

It was purely coincidental, but I had decided a few nights ago that I would start tracking the guitar parts for …HEAVEN… today. Last night I got a text from Peter Fitzpatrick to tell me that an old internet friend, Paul Culnane, had died yesterday in Australia.

I knew Paul from the XTC Chalkhills list. I never met him but I spoke to him on the phone once or twice. Paul was a real music enthusiast and was very encouraging of my own efforts to write and record songs. We get along pretty well in an arms-length, internetty sort of way. I seem to recall he spoke of visiting me here at some stage. It was never going to happen of course, but it was a nice thought.

In many ways, Paul’s life was dominated by his love for rock and roll, but I’m not so sure that it really brought him much in the way of happiness. A lot of us have been caught in that trap; some of us have come to terms with it and have found a way to live simultaneously in the musical world and the “real” world. Not too sure if the same could be said for Paul,. but then again I really didn’t know him all that well.

One thing for sure, though, the world will be a much duller place without him.

So, on the day when I was tracking the guitar parts for In Heaven For A Conference, Paul was signing -in at reception, getting his nametag and his welcome pack and wondering whether the sun had sufficiently crossed the yardarm to have his first tipple of the day. I’m guessing that in Heaven, the bar is always open, you never have to buy a round and you never get a hangover. Should suit Paul down to the ground then…;-)

In Heaven For A Conference/Hosanna In The Hiace/King Fidget – 140211

Sponsored by the letter E.

“Back in the saddle again…”

Did rough mixes for all three tracks in CE5, in anticipation of tracking guitar parts during the week.

Unfortunately, it looks like I’ll have to re-record the bass parts for HEAVEN… they just sound irrecoverably out-of-tune, so in doing the rough mix, I muted the bass parts, and I can use the same rough mix for bass and guitar parts. I also muted some of the more “wayward” sounding synth parts, as it’s likely that they would actually interfere in the tracking process.

We’ll see how this goes. If all else fails, I can program up a synth bass part if I have to…

Hosanna In The Hiace – 020211

Sponsored by the letter R.

Recorded 10 different bass parts on the Tascam 2488 using the 4003 and the Bass Pod XT. Interesting bass line – took me a while to get it right,  but got there eventually.

Perp Walk/Hosanna In The Hiace – 280111

Sponsored by the letter J.

PERP WALK

Changed some of the HALion One drum voices for voices from the Kore Player Sky Kit. Had to reinstall Kore PLayer first, which was a tad tedious, but worthwhile in the long run

HOSANNA…

Edited the drum parts in CE5 and changed the existing ride voice for a similar one from the Kore Player Sky Kit.

Things sounding a lot better now.
