Remixed/remastered both tracks in CE5, Cubase VST/24 and AA3.
Did two mixes of …FIDGET – an “album” mix” and a “single” mix. Did I say already that I’m going to release …FIDGET on an EP? Couple of weeks and we’ll see whether I’m lying or not…;-).
More work tomorrow.

On repeated listens, I came to the conclusion that the bass line for …FIDGET was way out of tune. I mean way out of tune. Worse than that even… This was as a result of the Jazz Bass being very badly in need a of a set-up at the time of recording, a matter which is dealt with here. That having been sorted, I decided that the best thing to do would be to re-record all the bass parts (9 of ‘em). So I spent a few hours last night re-recording on the Tascam 2488, using the Bass Pod XT. It’s amazing how much easier it is to play a bass line against actual music, rather than just against beats and a metronome. The session went quite smoothly.
I spent this morning doing audio cleanup on the bass parts in Cool Edit Pro and editing in CE5. The earlier and simpler parts hardly needed any editing at all, while the more complex parts in the middle needed a bit more. I also added a touch of auto-tuning to some of the Aria parts.
All in all, the track sounds much better and is ready for remixing and mastering next week.
I must have a good listen to see if there are any more of the Jazz Bass parts that need a seeing-too. Plenty of time for that…

I’ve been “tipping about” (as we say here) with the notion of artwork for the album. The album cover itself is sorted (the logo at the top of this page is a part of that), and I will use that design (but with the colour altered) for the King Fidget EP when that eventually comes out. Not sure about the font, though…I might do some further experimentation over the next while.
In the meantime, I hope to do some mixing/mastering tomorrow.

Now that all that MODERNISTA nonsense is out of the way (how are you enjoying it, by the way?), it’s time to get back on track with the project.
I spent most of the day mixing two versions of KING FIDGET in CE5 - the album version has a lot of business going on at the start of the track and this is edited out from the single version. Other than that, the mixes are identical.
The mixes were based on a rough headphone mix I did recently, which wasn’t too bad at all – just needed some tweaking. I had fun with setting pre-fader delay volumes – got that sorted eventually. I also had to patch up a bit of a hole in the middle of the track. I had originally proposed muting/unmuting the JV880 (JP Heaven) part, but I couldn’t do that precisely using the mouse, so I ended up slicing up part of the part (if you have me) and muting/unmuting by deleting every other slice. It’s not exactly what I had in mind, but it works effectively enough.
The two versions were compressed/limited in Cubase VST/24 and the wavs were tidied up in AA3.
The next tracks I intend mixing/mastering are …LAKE and BRAILLE…. I’ll chuck the three tracks out on an EP around August time in advance of a September album release date. I might even include the rough headphone mix of KING FIDGET mentioned above in the EP.
Oh, well, onwards and upwards!

Finished off the rough mixes:-
Had a minor panic when I discovered that although I had completed editing …IDLENESS, I hadn’t actually saved my work properly, so I had to do an emergency edit. Luckily it was a quick and straightforward task. The track sounds particularly fine, especially towards the end – spine-tingling
I also decided to do a quick re-edit to …FIDGET. One of the guitar parts was annoying me, so I found a neat little workaround that saves the day. Huzzah!
On a quick tot-up, I have about an hour of music (honestly didn’t think it was that much…) but taking out the tracks that aren’t going to make the final cut, I’m probably going to end up in the mid-50s. I’ve no problem with that.
Going to take a bit of a rest now. Off to NYC next week for a few days. Recharge the batteries an’ting…

Did very rough MP3 mixes of the following tracks:-
Five more to do after that over the course of the weekend. Then it’s time to make me minds up…;-)

Edited the bass parts in CE5. Considering the parts are relatively simple, there was rather a lot of editing required. But it got sorted eventually. I’m reluctant to mess around with the EQ on the bass, as I seem to have captured a fairly accurate facsimile of Roger Glover’s Rickenbacker 4003 bass tone from the classic Deep Purple Mk. II lineup…
…which is all the more remarkable when you consider that Glover’s Ric apparently had Fender Jazz Bass pickups…
I have now decided that the track will not feature on the finished album (no surprise…), but I plan to release a version of KING FIDGET as a promo EP, and I will use …LAKE…as one of the tracks. So you will get to hear it, folks.
I also plan to release some non-album material very shortly under the title MODERNISTA, as a kind of taster for the album. Details shortly…

djp
