People Who Look Like Other People – 210311

Sponsored by the letter S.

Recorded 9 different guitar parts on the Tascam 2488 using the 360 and the Pod 2.0. Very interesting results.

And that, my friends, would seem to complete the tracking of bass and guitar parts. Another project milestone reached!

Tomorrow, I hope to record an overdue bass session for Peter Fitzpatrick. That is, if the sky hasn’t fallen in the meantime…

Private Sector Weather Forecast Service – 160311

Sponsored by the letter D.

Time to welcome the return of an old friend…

Ric flair

My good old Rickenbacker 360 – still can’t play it, but I can squeeze some nice sounds out of it with a bit of trickery…

Recorded 10 different parts in a variety of “styles” (this term is used advisedly) on the Tascam 2488 using the Pod 2.0. The various bits and pieces should edit together quite nicely.

This track is really coming on a storm. Looking forward to the finished product.

The Cop Car Hand Heel Wheel Turn – 080311

Sponsored by the letter R.

Nice quick morning – recorded 11 guitar parts on the Tascam 2488 using the Les Paul Studio  and the Pod 2.0. And what odd parts they are, and what an odd little track this is – very short,  just around 2 minutes, but very fast. I plan to use a wah-wah pedal on the guitar parts in the final mix. Intrigued? You should be…

I’d like to thank Les for his brief, but vital, contribution to the album. Next week – the return of an old favourite…

A Truth You Can Happily Accept – 070311

Sponsored by the letters O and P.

Recorded 8 separate guitar parts on the Tascam 2488, using the Les Paul Studio and the Pod 2.0.

Not sure if I’m going to use them all (some of them are either dissonant or discordant - or just plain “off”) but we’ll see. Vaguely Keith Levine-esque…

Onwards and upwards, eh…?

Braille For The Feet – 040311

Sponsored by the letters F, G and H.

As promised, a new toy today…

No home is complete without a Gibson...

It’s a Gibson Les Paul Studio – the cheapest left-handed Gibson I could find. And not a bad little axe at all – if only I could actually play it…;-).

Recorded 10 guitar parts on the Tascam 2488 using the Pod 2.0. 4 of the parts are melodic little (and I mean “little”) licks, while the remaining parts cover an extended solo. Not too sure about the solo, but we’ll see how things pan out in the edit.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the Les Paul is the smell. Today was just the second day I’d ever taken it out of the case, and the studio is filled with a bizarre, bitter chocolate-y odour. Presumably from the finish. It’s nice, if a little overpowering, and I’m sure it’ll wear off given time.

No Position To Argue/Braille For The Feet/A Truth You Can Happily Accept/The Cop Car Hand Heel Wheel Turn – 030311

Sponsored by the letter D.

Hugely productive day today!

Recorded 5 harmonic guitar parts for …ARGUE on the Tascam 2488 using the Telecaster and the Pod 2.0. All came together terribly quickly, which gave me loads of time to work on the other tracks. This was the Telecaster’s final involvement in the project. New toy tomorrow…;-).

For the rest of the tracks, I arranged the various parts in CE5 in order to come up with coherent bass lines. Then I exported rough mixes of the tracks for tracking guitar parts over the next few days.

It is now apparent that there are a number of tracks that are rather similar in style. If I include all of them on the album, it’ll sound boring. So at some stage I will have to group the similar tracks together and pick the best ones to feature on the album. The other tracks might then be additional tracks on an EP, or even a “sister” album. Who knows?

Fly Me To Hecuba/Perp Walk – 020311

Sponsored by the letter C.

Another day, another toy…

*Not* going to smash my Telecaster through the television screen...

…HECUBA

Recorded 4 similar guitar parts on the Tascam 2488 using my Fender Telecaster and the Pod 2.0. Nice simple arpeggios (is that the correct plural form?). Should edit out nicely.

PERP WALK

Recorded 8 crunchy Tele parts. Sounds really good. I may have to edit the MIDI parts to fit around the guitar parts, but that’s not a problem.

Wasn’t expecting to do two tracks in one day. Well pleased!  But getting ahead of myself, perhaps?

More work tomorrow…

On The Lake Beneath The Shoreline – 220211

Sponsored by the letter R.

Difficult day today.

There are three areas of the track where guitar solos are suggested. I was working my way slowly through these and got a half-decent (for me) set of parts down for the first section. I was starting the second section when I lost all sound from the Strat. All sound, that is, other than fearful buzzing and screaming feedback. I was dreading that there might be something wrong with the electrics on the Strat, but after much time and trail-and-error, I found that the lead from the Strat to the Pod 2.0 was knackered. I was able to plug the Strat directly into the Tascam 2488 using the lead out from the Pod, which proved that the Strat was OK. This unfortunately brought my recording session to a premature end…

…and probably no harm too. I had just about reached the limits of my inability with the first solo section. Two further sections would’ve seen me running out of ideas (and fingertips) bigtime.

So what I’m going to do is use the parts I’d recorded for the first solo as a second solo, and then program keyboards solos for the first and third sections. There’s always a workaround.

I’m really getting the sense that I’m working on The Track That Doesn’t Want To Be Recorded. There’s usually at least one per album, and it may well be an indication of the track’s eventual fate. We’ll see…

Whatever Happened To The Citizens Of My Abandoned Evony City?/The Tree Of Idleness/On The Lake Beneath The Shoreline – 210211

Sponsored by the letters O and P.

Time for another piece of kit. Fender Stratocaster, step forward…

A Strat - Monday morning...

…EVONY…

Recorded 6 parts of Strat on the Tascam 2488 using the Pod 2.0. And an Ebow. I’d last used the Ebow on Raw Mesh a few years back. It seemed much easier to use back then. Today I was having great difficulty in coming up with anything jaw-droppingly exciting. But I think I have enough bits and pieces here to fade in and out of the mix. Not a problem.

…IDLENESS…

Recorded 3 nice Strat arpeggios. Tasty, if I do say so myself.

Although the track is rather short, I reckon it’s going to be a highlight of the album.

…LAKE…

Recorded 3 Strat parts. Essentially “twinned” single-string riffs, which again I will mix in and out of the track. Still not sure if the track is going to make the final cut. But I’ll persevere with it for another while (as in, tomorrow, where I will attempt to record some lead parts on the Strat. Gawdelups…).

King Fidget – 170211

Sponsored by the letter I.

Recorded 10 guitar parts on the Tascam 2488 using the TA-40 and the Pod 2.0.

Most of the parts are simplistic one-string post-punk riffs, with some choppy harmonics and discordant arpeggios thrown in for good measure. Well, I suppose I could actually learn to play guitar properly but that would take me years.

I can hear some dub elements going on here. Furthermore, the HALionOne beats I’ve used have vinyl scratch sounds, and I’m half-thinking of keeping in all the accidental buzzes and pops that I recorded with the guitar parts. Only half-thinking though…

That’s the TA-40′s part in the project completed. Tomorrow I plan to retrack the bass parts for…HEAVEN… with the Jazz Bass. Maybe I’ll get it in tune this time, eh?

Regards,

djp

The biography of an album from conception to release, as you might say.
