The Tree Of Idleness/Perp Walk – 310511

Sponsored by the letter D.

Another successful day at the coalface!

Mixed/mastered …IDLENESS and PERP… successfully in CE5, Cubase VST/24 and AA3. …IDLENESS sounds particularly classy, while PERP… sounds way more rockin’ and denser than I’d expected originally. Yowza!

Break for a few days, and then more work!

Rough mixing – 070511

Sponsored by no letter at all

Finished off the rough mixes:-

  1. Private Sector Weather Forecast Service
  2. The Cop Car Hand Heel Wheel Turn
  3. The Tree Of Idleness
  4. Vichy Circles
  5. Whatever Happened To The Citizens Of My Abandoned Evony City?

Had a minor panic when I discovered that although I had completed editing …IDLENESS, I hadn’t actually saved my work properly, so I had to do an emergency edit. Luckily it was a quick and straightforward task. The track sounds particularly fine, especially towards the end – spine-tingling

I also decided to do a quick re-edit to …FIDGET. One of the guitar parts was annoying me, so I found a neat little workaround that saves the day. Huzzah!

On a quick tot-up, I have about an hour of music (honestly didn’t think it was that much…) but taking out the tracks that aren’t going to make the final cut, I’m probably going to end up in the mid-50s. I’ve no problem with that.

Going to take a bit of a rest now. Off to NYC next week for a few days. Recharge the batteries an’ting…

The Tree Of Idleness – 200411

Sponsored by the letter S.

Edited the guitar parts in CE5. Only three parts to work from, and it all came together very easily. Dropped a section of the JV880 Dig Rhodes part. The arrangement works much better now.

One more done. Time to move on…

The Tree Of Idleness – 190411

Sponsored by the letter R.

Edited the bass parts in CE5. Came together nice and easy. Track sounding rather fine and, more importantly, “key” to the album.

Had to re-record the JV880 Dig Rhodes 2 part as I detected a crackle close to the start. There’s a lot of electrical kit in the house and sometimes my recording setup picks up these crackles, but  they often manifest themselves while monitoring rather than while recording. If the same crackle appears at the same point in a track every time I monitor it, then I know there’s a problem, as was the case today. No hassle to rectify, though…

More work tomorrow.

The Tree Of Idleness/Perp Walk – 030411

Sponsored by the letter R.

Back in the saddle (as it were), all refreshed after a short break from my travails

Did audio cleanup on the relevant wavs in Cool Edit Pro. More to do tomorrow and Tuesday. With a bit of luck I’ll be finished with the cleanup this week, and then I can press on with editing.

Whatever Happened To The Citizens Of My Abandoned Evony City?/The Tree Of Idleness/On The Lake Beneath The Shoreline – 210211

Sponsored by the letters O and P.

Time for another piece of kit. Fender Stratocaster, step forward…

A Strat - Monday morning...

…EVONY…

Recorded 6 parts of Strat on the Tascam 2488 using the Pod 2.0. And an Ebow. I’d last used the Ebow on Raw Mesh a few years back. It seemed much easier to use back then. Today I was having great difficulty in coming up with anything jaw-droppingly exciting. But I think I have enough bits and pieces here to fade in and out of the mix. Not a problem.

…IDLENESS…

Recorded 3 nice Strat arpeggios. Tasty, if I do say so myself.

Although the track is rather short, I reckon it’s going to be a highlight of the album.

…LAKE…

Recorded 3 Strat parts. Essentially “twinned” single-string riffs, which again I will mix in and out of the track. Still not sure if the track is going to make the final cut. But I’ll persevere with it for another while (as in, tomorrow, where I will attempt to record some lead parts on the Strat. Gawdelups…).

In Heaven For A Conference/Whatever Happened To The Citizens Of My Abandoned Evony City?/The Tree Of Idleness/On The Lake Beneath The Shoreline – 180211

Sponsored by the letter J.

…HEAVEN…

I’d planned to track bass parts with the Jazz Bass, but for some reason I couldn’t get it tuned properly. The action is pretty high on it, so it probably needs to be set up (the casualty list is growing…). I decided to bring in the 4003 from the subs’ bench, which is a rather nice option to have, don’t you think?

Quickly recorded 10 parts on the Tascam 2488 using the Bass Pod XT. Hopefully this should edit out nicely…

…EVONY…/…IDLENESS…/…LAKE…

Threw together some rough mixes in CE5 for guitar tracking next week.  Where …IDLENESS… was concerned, I had to record some MIDI parts as audio before making the rough mix (D110 - Warm Pad/JV880 – Dig Rhodes 2). …IDLENESS… is sounding particularly fine even thought there’s a need for some heavy editing of the bass parts. …LAKE…still sounds rather odd, but not as odd as it used to sound before I tracked the bass parts.

Time to introduce a new weapon from my musical arsenal. All will be revealed on Monday (hopefully…).

djp

The Tree Of Idleness/Whatever Happened TO The Citizens Of My Abandoned Evony City? – 190111

Sponsored by the numbers 0-9 and no letter at all.

THE TREE OF IDLENESS

Some fun today, trying to record the Jazz Bass on the Tascam 2488. Although I tuned the bass correctly to 440 Hz, for some reason (possibly something to do with the Ganges Pad voice),  it sounded way out of tune. So I had to detune the bass to tie in with the voice. Not at all sure how it sounds – perhaps I’m being over critical - but I’ll have to review this at some stage. Maybe there’s some way of “regularising” the pitch on the voice. Anyway, don’t be at all surprised if I end up having to re-record the bass parts. Luckily enough, there are only three parts and they’re fairly simple, so it wouldn’t be a major hassle to go back over them.

The track sounds great generally, and it’s one of those that’ll feature on the album regardless of the effort required to get it right.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE CITIZENS OF MY ABANDONED EVONY CITY?

Recorded a rough mix together with metronome beats in CE5, to facilitate recording bass and guitar parts.

Having problems with the transport bar in CE5 again. Most irritating…

The Tree Of Idleness – 170111

Sponsored by the letter U.

I should’ve known from experience (as in “the triumph of optimism over…”) that when I wrote “tomorrow” last Friday, I wouldn’t actually get to do any work on the track on Saturday.

As it happened, I was surprised with the offer of a night away in a nice out-of-town hotel Saturday night. Came back home yesterday tired but happy. No position to work on the track yesterday either.

So I made up for it this evening by programming the Dig Rhodes 2 voice off the JV-880 in CE5. Programmed two parts, but I might only use one. I also programmed an additional Warm Pad part off the D-110. Finally I programmed some tasty beats using the HALion One VST plugin.

Pretty much ready for recording bass and guitar parts. This week? Who knows? Should I tempt fate?

djp

The Tree Of Idleness – 140111

Sponsored by the letter R.

Edited the Ganges Pad voice on the Prologue VST plugin in CE5 and added a bridge section. Nice.

Added a section using my old favourite  Warm Pad voice off the D-110. I also experimented with (but didn’t program) the Dig Rhodes 2 voice off the JV-880. A job for tomorrow, perhaps?
